LIVING LEGENDS IN CONCERT:
Rajeev Taranath
Herrick Chapel, Occidental College
1600 Campus Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90041

A distinguished disciple of the legendary maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Rajeev Taranath was the recipient of the Indian government's highest award in the arts in 1999— for outstanding achievement in the classical music field.
Taranath's credentials as a researcher and educator are as impressive as his track record as an artist. A noted linguist, he speaks eight languages fluently and holds a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Mysore. As a Ford Foundation Scholar, he researched one of the most important lineages of classical Indian music, the Maihar-Allauddin Gharana. Additionally, from 1995 to 2005, Taranath served on the music faculty of the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles.
Internationally acclaimed performer, Rajeev Taranath is today one of the leading exponents of the sarod. His performances masterfully combine the depth and rigor of the tradition of Hindustani classical music with an inspired imagination and emotional intensity.

The Dhrupad Sisters
Herrick Chapel, Occidental College
1600 Campus Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90041

The 2019 tour of the United States by the Dhrupad Sisters marks a dramatic advancement in the evolution of Dhrupad—the most ancient form of Indian classical music—in the soundscape of twenty-first century American music, for this trio comprises the first all-women Dhrupad ensemble (vocal duo and pakhawaj) ever to perform in the US. Even though in prior eras there were a handful of women performers, Dhrupad has been almost exclusively the domain of men with even fewer women performing on the pakhawaj. Amita Sinha Mamapatra and Janhavi Phansalkar, senior disciples of the Gundecha Brothers, will perform with Akhilesh Gundeccha’s senior disciple, Anuja Borude, on the pakhawaj. All are seasoned performers..
