Join us for a Pre-Concert Talk with flute maestro Ronu Majumdar!

Whether you are an Indian Classical music connoisseur or curious about this ancient, sophisticated art form, join us one hour before showtime on Saturday for our first-ever Pre-Concert Talk. This pre-show talk will be instrumental (pun fully intended!) in putting the raga, rhythm, skill, and tradition in context that will impart excitement and curiosity for the performance.

The Pre-Concert Talk is open to any ticket holders with no no additional charge or RSVP needed. The Pre-Concert Talk will take place from 5-5:30 at Herrick Chapel before doors open at 5:30.

Ronu Majumdar, flute 

Pt Ronu Majumdar is responsible for popularizing Indian Flute (Bansuri) in the younger generation of this era all over the Globe. India’s Ace Flautist needs no introduction to music lovers all over the Globe. By virtue of his phenomenal talent, he and the Bansuri are literally synonymous.

Pt. Ronu Majumdar is considered the most respected name in the Indian flute playing of this era. When it comes to flute, Pt. Ronu Majumdar is a style maker and has invented unique style of rendering the Raga, which has good mixture of ‘Drupad Gayaki’ with ‘Laykari’. Pt. Ronu Majumdar is credited for making flute a popular musical instrument among people of all generations. Ry Cooder has rightly said ‘Ronu is definitely the Dr. Feelgood of the Indian Flute’.

Ranendra Majumdar, popularly known as Ronu Majumdar is a force to reckon within the realm of Indian classical music both as a thinking musician and scintillating performer. Pt.Ronu Majumdar began playing the flute under the guidance of his father late Dr. Bhanu Majumdar, late Pt. Lakshman Prasad Jaipurwale and finally the revered Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao. He was also fortunate to receive training from his grand guru Pt. Ravi Shankar.

A powerhouse performer, Ronu Majumdar is firmly rooted in the Maihar gharana. He has been felicitated with numerous remarkable accolades for his mesmerizing performances worldwide. 

Ronuji has created an enviable niche for himself in the field of contemporary popular music which is exemplified by his Grammy Nomination in 1996. 

Pt. Ronu Majumdar has composed music for India’s first I-Max film “Mystic India”. Pt. Ronu Majumdar has conducted a concert of 5,378 flautists on one stage called ‘Venu Naad’. The event has been recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Pt Ronu Majumdar has been awarded the ‘Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2014’ for his contribution to Hindustani Instrumental Music – Flute. Films Division of India has produced a documentary film on Pt. Ronu Majumdar called ‘Bansuriwala’.

Hrishikesh Majumdar, flute

Hrishikesh Majumdar is a very talented, skilled and a proficient upcoming flute artist and prodigy. He has been learning from his father, legendary Guru Pt RONU MAJUMDAR from tender age of 6 years.

He has also taken vocal training from his mother Mrs. ANANDI BULA MAJUMDAR He is also learning intricacies of vocal training from Guru Pandit VIKAS

KASHALKAR.

Apart from classical music, he has worked in many new age music and has also composed music for many projects like SEVEN COLOURS OF LIFE. He recently came up with a great concept in which he fused Indian classical music with trance music and came up with a concept of FLUTE TRANCE which was highly appreciated by the music lovers.

His jugalbandi with his father in Goa Fest 2019 has become a rage. Hrishikesh has also performed jugalbandi with his father at many prestigious festivals in India. Hrishikesh also performs regularly with his father in jugalbandi concerts. He won first prize in India level in SWAR SADHANA SAMITI for Instrumental Music.

Hrishikesh is an art graduate student from JAI HIND COLLEGE OF ARTS, MUMBAI and currently pursuing B.A in Music from BHARATI VIDYAPEETH UNIVERSITY. Hrishikesh represents the Maihar Gharana binkaari style like his father and performs in Dhrupad style alaap, Jod Jhaala and Ghatkari style and is equally trying his skills in Thumri, Dadra and folk music.

Sri Subhajyoti Guha, tabla

Subhajyoti Guha, a senior disciple of Pandit Sankha Chatterjee, is a much sought after Tabla player from Kolkata, India. He is a grade 'A' Tabla artist of A.I.R and Doordarshan. Subhajyoti tours regularly in India, USA, Canada and Europe and has performed nationally and internationally with many senior and famous artistes from India, namely Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, Pandit Manilal Nag, Ustad Aashish Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, Pandit Tejendranarayan Majumder, Pandit Vishwamohan Bhatt, Pandit Ronu Majumder, Vidushi Purnima Chaudhuri and Vidushi Kala Ramnath, Sri Jayteerth Mehundi, Sri Purbayan Chatterjee and Smt Kaushiki Chakraborty among others. Subhajyoti has also extended his horizons outside Indian Classical Music

and collaborated with many jazz music from USA and Canada. He has his own Indo-Jazz band AMEYA based in Toronto. Academically Subhajyoti has obtained a Masters degree in Applied Mathematics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, but he is following his dream of teaching and performing Indian Classical Music.
