What is a Baithak? Baithak is a hindi word for an educational sit down between a teacher and his students or an artist and his audience. Indian music is an oral tradition of music and follows the technique of Gurukul. In a Baithak the teacher or the artist expands on a myraid of topics that may not be addressed in a one on one session.Come join us an experience a very traditional Baithak session.

Along with five student musicians, Vinod will explore one raga in its entirety showing how it is developed and what to listen for as an erudite listener or a beginning listener. The same raga will be demonstrated by both North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic) musicians allowing a comparison of the two styles.

Vinod will then demonstrate how percussion is used in both North Indian and South Indian music giving many examples of what to listen for. The Baithak will end with a percussion solo on the miridangam, the ghatam and the western drum set.
