Umakant and Ramakant Gundecha are arguably the leading and most active current performers of the dhrupad style of Hindusthani vocal music. Dhrupad is the profound spiritual style that historically preceded khyal, the style of North Indian classical music most commonly heard today.
Born in Ujjain in Central India, the Gundecha Brothers were initiated into music by their parents. They received a conventional university education and learned the dhrupad art under the renowned vocalist Zia Fariduddin Dagar and also Zia Mohiuddin Dagar.
