Special
Emerging Artists Series
The Music Circle will present a series of concerts
in September, October, and November of 2008 featuring a select group of talented
younger artists. Each concert will feature two artists with their accompanists,
one before intermission and one after intermission. This series is funded
in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Roopa Mahadevan,
who was born and raised in San Jose, is a rising Carnatic (South
Indian) vocalist. She received a Fulbright scholarship for 2006-2007
to pursue advanced vocal music training in India. Roopa has performed
throughout India, and has given concerts in most major music institutions
in Chennai, the hub of Carnatic music in India. Roopa is also
an accomplished Bharatha Natyam dancer, an amateur theater actor,
and occasional performer of R&B and soul music. She received
her bachelors and masters degrees in biology and neuroscience
from Stanford University. (Click

Aishwarya Venkataraman
was born in Northridge, California, in 1993. She grew up
surrounded by music and musicians, including her father, who accompanies
her today on mrdangam. She began her training in Suzuki violin
at age two-and-a-half, and at age four she started learning the
Carnatic style of music with eminent violin maestro T. N. Krishnan.
Widely regarded as the Yehudi Menuhin of the East, Krishnan has
selected Aishu to be his next protégé. Aishu recently
began training also at the Berklee College of Music, with an emphasis
on jazz performance. Earning a full scholarship at age 13, she
carries the unique distinction of being the youngest student accepted
into this four-year college. [Video

Debasish Chaudhuri,
who was born in India and now resides in the Los Angeles area,
is a sought-after tabla accompanist, soloist, and teacher. He began
his musical studies at age five under the guidance of Nanku Maharaj
and Kanai Dutta, and for over thirty years, he has studied with
his uncle, renowned tabla maestro Swapan Chaudhuri. He has accompanied
various world-renowned artists and has been on the faculty of the
Pandit Jasraj School of Music Foundation at Los Angeles, CA and
in Tampa, Florida. He is a director of the newly-formed Rupak School
of World Music in Los Angeles.
Nilanjan Chaudhuri
is the 18-year-old son of the great tabla maestro, Swapan Chaudhuri,
who gave him his first lesson at age five. Nilanjan performed his
first tabla solo at the Ali Akbar College of Music at age eleven,
receiving blessings from Ali Akbar Khan. Since 2005, Nilan has played
in concerts in the USA and in India. He is also an avid jazz drummer
and his unique style of drumming has been profoundly influenced
by his study of tabla. He is a student at San Francisco State University,
as well as at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael.

Smita Rawal Alves was
born and raised in southern California. Her training
in kathak includes six years in Anjani Ambegaokar's Sundar Kala
Kendra Dance School and 14 years with Anjanis Kathak Dance
of India, a touring company in which she has been the lead dancer
since 2006. She has taught classes for the dance school since 2005.
Some of her recent performances include Diwali at the United Nations
in New York, 2006; Concordia University in Montreal, 2006; Fine
Arts Academy in Hawaii, 2006; and the Nate Holden Performing Arts
Center in Los Angeles, 2006. Smita has a M.S. in zoology and teaches
biology and environmental science fulltime at Cerritos College. (Click

Prasad Upasani
represents the Agra Gharana of vocal music. His first teacher was his
father, Sharadchandra Upasani. His formal instruction then came from S. C. R.
Bhat and K. G. Ginde, two disciples of the musicologist S. N. Ratanjankar.
Prasad has won a number of prizes at music competitions in India. He holds
a bachelors degree in music and a masters in computer science. (Click
